A motion, in the form of a recommendation to the incoming committee, that enquiries be made into the pos sibility of holding a district contest, was passed at Thursday night’s annual meeting of the Carterton Municipal Silver Band.

In the Police Court at Dunedin yesterday John Thomas Neill was sentenced to 21 days’ imprisonment for driving a motor-car while intoxicated. His licence was suspended and he was prohibited from driving for two years. The police stated that the accused struck a telegraph post and knocked a man off a bicycle.—(P.A.) A denial that there was any serious leakage from the dam at the Waitaki hydro electric works was given by the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, when commenting in an interview in Wellington last evening on statements which have been circulating in Canterbury and Otago that all is not well with the huge dam across the Waitaki. The Minister made a statement reviewing the situation which arose when three of the temporary sluice gates in the dam failed to close securely and the efforts which have been made since to close them. These efforts have extended over a period of eighteen months. A dance is to be held in the Municipal Hall on Saturday, July 11, by the Masterton Harrier Club. The guests of the evening will he the visiting members of the Wanganui Harrier Club.
