BETTING RAIDS.
CHARGES AGAINST SYDNEY POLICE. ALLEGATIONS OF “FRAMING” & “PLANTING.” EVIDENCE BEFORE COMMISSION OF INQUIRY. (Received Friday, 8.20 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 29. The Royal Commissioner, Judge Markell, on betting raids and police methods in connection with them, is at present taking the evidence of Ernest Howe, who alleges that he was “framed”—that betting slips stolen from files in the Police Department were “planted” on him after his arrest, that he was struck by a constable and also booted across a room by a sergeant in an effort to compel him to make a statement. The policemen involved were Sergeant Christensen, Constables Donnelly and Grant and Police Agent Kevin Lynch. Howe stated that the Magistrate dismissed the charge of illegal betting against him, whereupon the police told him they would get even with him later. A week later he was again arrested and fined £2O, although he persisted that he was innocent.
