The Masterton County Council, at its annual meeting yesterday decided to allow a rebate of five per cent, off the general rate if paid within thirty days of demand.

Complimentary references were Made by several councillors at the annual meeting of the Masterton County Council yesterday to the comprehensive and informative report of the Clerk, Mr. J. C. D. Maekley. Councillors agreed that the report was a most valuable one.

The recommendation of the South Canterbury Association to the Management Committee for the next New Zealand tennis championships tournament to be held at Timaru, was passed at last night’s meeting of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association Council.—(P.A.) Councillor W. I. Armstrong was reelected chairman of the Masterton County Council yesterday for a further period of twelve months. Several councillors referred to the splendid work carried Out by Councillor Armstrong as chairman for many years past. The chairman’s honorarium was fixed at £75 per year. The half-yearly meeting of the Oddfellows ’ Lodge was well attended, and reports from the various committees were adopted. An invitation from the Johnsonville Lodge to attend their jubilee on June 23 was received; and the Lodge will be well represented. Conveyances will leave the Lodge Room at 230 p.m. Four friends were initiated into the Order. Letters of recommendation were received from Invercargill Lodge; also the Hastings Lodge, and! one forwarded to the Te Kuiti Lodge. The Prime Minister’s denial that it was the Government's' intention to include meat and wod! in the guaranteed priee scheme was referred to in an interview at Wanganui last night by Mr. W., J. Polson, M.P. ' Mr. Polson said that at a largely attended conference at Feilding he had quoted Messrs Savage, Nash and Langstone over their own signatures as declaring that meat and wool would be included. He said Mr. Savage’s decision to recede from that position was the result of pressure of farming opinion. Mr. Polson stated emphatically that meetings of farmers which he had addressed throughout the country were almost universally opposed' to the guarantee as outlined by the-Minister of Finance and also to Government control of their produce. Resolutions had been, passed at practically every meeting in support of his own, attitude. At the conclusion of Mr. Polson’s address at Feilding yesterday,c a resolution was carried approving his attitude and expressing confidence in him, after an amendment of a Vite of thanks only had been heavily defeated.—i(P.A.)
