SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS. MARTINBOROUGH. ("The Age” Special.) A successful competitor in the recent Eisteddfod Competitions held recently in Wellington was Sam Alpe, who gained highly commended, very highly commended and two third places in the vocal section for boys or girls from twelve to sixteen years. He was also third in the vocal championship. Martinborough was en fete on Friday the last day of the Queen Carnival effort, when there was a record crowd in the township The football match, Town v. Country, was won by the Town team by 13 points to 6. The procession was original and most amusing—cowboys and Indians, "Pop Eye” the Sailor busily eating spinach, Charlie Chaplin, decorated bicycles, lorries, cars and wheelbarrows all caused much amusement while a Paddy’s Market did brisk trade. The proceedings culminated with a most enjoyable dance held in the Town Hall. Mrs F. E. Fleury has returned from Otaki Beach. Mrs Mitchell and Miss Hope Mitchell have, returned from a short visit to Wellington. Mrs Webb is at present in Christchurch, where she is the guest of her daughter, Mrs lan Cottrell. Mrs A. Tyler has returned from a holiday in Palmerston North.

Mrs H. L. Griffiths has returned from Wellington. Miss Eileen Grant has returned to Trentham after a visit to her sisters in Martinborough. Miss Frances Reid, of Gisborne, has been appointed Plunket Nurse for the district in place of Miss McKee who has been transferred to Levin. PIRINOA. ("The Age” Special.) The many friends of Mr. Henry McMaster, who recently met with a serious accident, will be pleased to know that he is making satisfactory progress. The death occurred recently at Featherston of the infant child of Mr. and Mrs W. Flutey. Mrs Flutey was recently admitted to the Masterton Hospital for treatment. Mr. and Mrs Didsbury, Wellington were visiting relatives in this district at the week end. The sawmill owned by Mr. J. D. Morrison, which has been erected at Kohunui, for the purpose of milling the white pine bush, commenced cutting yesterday. PreparatiAs for the opening ball which is trwdie held to-morrow night ate well forward. The floor has been specially prepared and the supper arrangements, which are in the hands of a committee of ladies, promise to be as good as on previous occasions.
