CHARGE OF ARSON.

FARM HAND ADMITS GUILT.

COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE. STRATFOED, March 13. A suspicious fire in the Toko Hotel on Saturday had a sequel in the Police Court to-day, when Douglas Fraser, a farm hand, was charged with arson. The accused admitted the offence, saying that he set fire to the lavatory to get one back on the licensee, who refused him any more drink, i He made a Statement to the police to that effect and pleaded guilty. Ho was committed for sentence at the Wellington Supreme Court.—(P.A.)

There are hints of a strike by Rugby referees, if a notice of motion to come before the annual meeting of the Otago Rugby Union is carried. The motion is to give the right to the union to take the placing of referees for Saturday matches out of the hands of the Referees’ Association.—(P-A.) At Auckland last night Miss Edna Rainey, aged 16 years, lowered Miss P. Robertson’s hundred yards New Zealand swimming record for intermediate girls from .65 3-ssecs. to 65 l-ssocs. Miss Rainey’s time was only J a second slower than the time in which Miss Barbara Lewin won the Auckland senior ladies’ championship last month and 2-5 of a second outside Miss M.
