TAXES CAUSE RIOTS.
WARSHIPS RUSH TO ST. PIEBBH ■SAILORS TAKE CHARGE VANCOUVER, August 27. A message from St. Pierre and Miquelon states that rioting by the populace at St. Pierre in protest against the imposition of taxes by the Governor of the French Colony, resulted in the rushing of two warships to the port, and the occupation of the city by armed sailors. (St. Pierre and Miquelon, small islands to the south of Newfoundland, are French possessions.) CITIZENS ARRESTED. (Received Monday, 7 p.m.) VANCOUVER!, August 27. At St. Pierre, a number of citizens have been arrested and sailors are patrolling the streets. The Governor’s action was taken in disregard of a protesting vote by elected members of the Government Council.
