BANK RETURNS.
INCREASE IN FREE AND FIXED DEPOSITS. BIG DROP IN ADVANCES. WELLINGTON, April 6. The bank returns for the quarter ending on March 31, show that Government deposits, compared with the corresponding quarter last year, increased by £624,629. Free deposits increased by £462,460, and fixed deposits by £742,699. Advances decreased by '£1,584,803; discounts decreased by £147,260; circulation increased by £129,796; coin and bullion decreased by £1,385,035. Free deposits last quarter amounted to. £17,461,282, compared with £16,998,822 in the same quarter last year. Fixed deposits are £35,208,988, compared with £34,466,289 last year. Advances amount to £47,934,82-8, compared with £49,519,631 last year. Discounts are £565,446, compared with £712,706 last year. Note circulation is £6,004,821, compared with £5,875,025. Coin and bullion are shown at £5,213,756, compared with £6,589,791 last year.—(P.A.)
