SHIPPING INDUSTRY.
EFFECT OF STATE-AIDED VESSELS.
MENACE TO FREIGHT MARKET
LONDON, July 3>.
The report of the committee of the Chamber of Shipping of the United Kingdom on shipping policy says “the appalling condition to which the British shipping industry is reduced is mainly attributable to the direct and indirect action of governments bringing ships into existence for political and. not for commercial reasons, and in persisting in the running of such vessels at a heavy loss at the cost of the taxpayers, while at the same time imposing ever-increasing restrictions and limitations of the volumes of cargoes passing through their ports. State-aided ships are a standing menace to the freight market. The matter should be placed before the Ottawa Conference, and a scheme formulated for the scrapping or laying-up of surplus tonnage.”
