PERMANENT SURFACING.
PLANS FOB WELLINGTON-NAPIER SECTION APPROVED. AN INCREASED ESTIMATE. The District Engineer, Public Works Department advised the Masterton County Council, at its meeting yesterday, that the increased estimate for extra work in connection with preparation and consolidation of 3J miles of the Wellington-Napier Highway had been approved. Before any additional authority could bo issued, however, it would be necessary to submit the flans of the proposed work in quadruplicate. The chairman (Councillor W. I. Armstrong) said that the estimate had been increased front £1,680 to £2,454. In the original estimate the Overseer had only allowed for metal to be put on for dry-roading. From experience they had found that dry-roading was not satisfactory. The extra cost to the county was about £2OO, but they would have the satisfaction of having the work carried out properly. The letter was received and the plans are to be forwarded as requested.
