A cyclist named Keith Robinson Hjayhow, aged 22, was admitted to the Wanganui Hospital last evening suffering from severe head injuries sustained when, he was run down by a motor car on the Heads Road, Wanganui. The ear was driven by a youth, William Holt, w garage assistant.
While alongside the Union Com pay’s collier Kaponga at the King’s Wharf, Auckland, yesterday morning, the scow Moehau sprang a leak and capsized. Nobody was aboard, but 50 tons of coal valued at £lOO, was tipped into the harbour. The scow, which is owned by the Northeote and Birkenhead Gas Co., was ready to be towed across to Northeote. She was subsequently raised by the floating crane.—(P.A.)
The annual report of the directors of the Standard Insurance Company states that the income from all sources for the year amounts to £3OS,762 19s 3d, to which has to be 'added the balance brought forward from, last year, £19,118 12s. The surplus on the year’s operations, after making full provision for all ascertained losses to June 30, payment of an interim dividend, donation to guarantee and provident fund, depreciation of properties and allocation of £25,000 to the reserves fund, amounts to £35,644 9s 4d. Out of this surplus the directors recommend the payment of a dividend at the rate of Is 3d pel share, absorbing £12,500 and to carry forward to next year the balance of £23,144 9s 4d.—(P.A.)
The Public Accounts of the Dominion for the first three months of the financial year were published yesterday. They show that revenue for the period amounted to £4,172,123, compared with £4,665,928 for the corresponding period of last year—a decrease of £493,805. Customs duties showed an increase of £88,576 for three months. This increase is made up of an increase of £153,149 for the month of June, partly offset by a decrease during the first two months. Expenditure for the quarter amounted to £5,563,215, compared with £6,320,542 in the corresponding quarter of last year. The decrease of £757,327 is largely nominal, being accounted for o by alterations in the dates of interest payments. The decrease in departmental expenditure is only £ll,636.
