At a meeting of the Dunedin City Council last night a resolution to borrow £25,000 as an unemployment relief ioan was carried. The council decided to make a donation of £5OO to the earthquake relief fund.—(PA.)

At a meeting of directors of the Wairarapa Rural Intermediate Credits Association yesterday, over which the chairman, Mr. A. Ross, presided, a further application for a loan was received. Several loans were finalised and handed over to the applicants.

Mr. W. E. Knowles, manager of the Kaiparoro Dairy Factory, received a very painful injury to his arm while playing for the Red Star football club against Greytown on Saturday. An Xray exarHnation reverled that the muscles had been torn from the elbow.

The Municipal band will provide the music a‘ the Thanksgiving Service in St. Matthew’s Church on Sunday morning next. The band will also play the local military forces to the church and on the return march. The band invites all old bandsmen to assist on Sunday and to attend the practice to-night. At a special meeting of the Eketahuna Branch of the Farmers’ Union, held recently, a -special committee of twelve was set up to canvass the district with reference to Uio possibility of establishing a herd-testing in the district. Mr. James Watson, Secretary of the Wairarapa Herd-Testing Association, will meet the committee to-day to receive their report and consider the formation of a group.

A surprise party took place at the residence Of Mr. and Mrs R. J. Harman, Hannui, on Saturday evening, the occasion being a presentation to Mrs Harman, late postmistress of the district, and Miss B. Harman, on behalf of the Haunui residents. Mr. W. Geange, in making the presentation, took the opportunity of thanking Mr. and Mrs Harman and family for their many kindnesses and help during their term of office (21 years), stating that no matter what hour of the day or night calls were made, they were always answered willingly though perhaps at great inconvenience. Mrs Harman received two very nice bedroom rugs and Miss B. Harman a Doulton teapot, with cup and saucer. Mr Harman thanked the residents for their kindly thought, and said that the family deeply appreciated the useful presents and the feeling underlying the same. The evening was spent in cards and music and a pleasant time ended with “Auld Long Syne.” Strong girl wanted. Small set of discs wanted. Six-roomed house for private sale. Airedale terrier pup lost. Reward. Ten cords of Maire firewood wanted. Boy wanted before and after school. Electric model Indian motor cycle for sale. Miss Kathleen Dyer’s toilet rooms will be closed this week. To those in search of bargains it will pay to wait until Monday next, for the commencement of C. D. Shoosmith’s sale.

The Wairarapa Farmers’ Sweet Department are giving special values this month, and all prices are reduced. Their window display is well worth inspection.

A concert by 4A Company Girl Guides will be given in St. Matthew’s Parish Hall on Saturday next at 7.30 p.m. A first-class programme has been arranged and an enjoyable evening is assured.
