PROPOSAL TO HOLD SPORTS ON NEW DATE MOTION CARRIED AT ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society was held last night, the president, Mr L. COiarke, presiding over a fair attendance of members. Several apologies for absence were received. The annual report and balance sheet were read and adopted. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: President, Mr L. Clarke; ' vice-presidents, Messrs H. Mackenzie Douglas and A. 0. MacDiatmid; treasurer, Mr J. Kerslake; directors, Messrs T. B. Braggins, lan Uameron, W. J. Campbell, W. Douglas, J. V. Gordon, J. W. Headerson, W. E. Knott, G. Malmo, E. D. McLachlan, D. A. Pickering and J. Walker; auditor, Mr R. Brown,; honorary dancer, Mr D. H. Bthwell; honorary pipers, Messrs T. Young, R. Burns, A, Barclay, F. Walker; life members, Mr. R. Cameron, Mauriceville, and- Mr J; W. Henderson, Masterton. Messrs P. A. Macomish and A. E. Clarke were elected as new members. Mr H. M. Douglas proposed the following motion: ‘‘That in the opinion' of this meeting, the Society has outlived its usefulness as an organiser of athletic sports meetings, and that in view of the heavy annual loss on the Society’s sports, it be a recommendation to the incoming directors to con■sider the abandoning for the future of the sports and the substitution of other activities, especially those of a national character.” Mr Douglas said that the annual loss on the sports was from £BO to £lOO and if this loss continued, the society would very soon fizzle out.” The society did? not" exist only to conduct sports meetings. Its object was to foster things Scottish and the sports, as they stood, revealed nothing distinctly Scottish. As one means of stimulating membership he suggested offering prizes for essays written by pupils attending the High School and Technical School, the essays to deal with matters relevant to the Scottish tradition and aims. Mr G. Malmo seconded the motion, agreeing with all Mr Douglas had suggested. Mr I. Cameron opposed the total abandonment of the sports,, which he considered would be “a_step too drastic for the- society to attempt. ’ ’ He was ini favour of holding the sports on a different date. Finally, after a somewhat protracted discussion, the motion was defeated. Mr Douglas then moved hi-s alternative motion: “That the directors consider the advisability of holding the sports on some other day than New Year’s Day.”

Mr Cameron seconded this motion and it was carried unanimously. Several members expressed their appreciation of the excellent work performed in te interest's of the society by' their efficient secretary, Mr P. H. Macomish.
