FARMERS’ UNION.
MEETING OF MARTINBOROUGH BRANCH. THE PORK EXPORT SUBSIDY. A meeting of the Martinborough branch of the Farmers * Union was held on Thursday, Mr. W. Colman presiding over an attendance of fourteen. The pork industry was discussed, members complaining that id. per lb. subsidy was being paid to the exporter and not to the grower. Several suggestions were made and it was eventually agreed to bring the matter before the next meeting of the Provincial Executive to deal with. One of those present said it did not pay to grow pork for less than 5d per lb.
The matter of a cull cow drive was also discussed, but it appeared that there would not be enough cows offering to make it worth while.
