SLOW SCORING

CROWD MAKES SARCASTIC COMMENTS.

AUSTRALIANS LOSE FOUR WICKETS FOB 173. — ENGLAND BY NO MEANS BEATEN, United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received Friday, 8.15 p.m.) MELBOURNE, March 15. Pleasant weather prevailed when the fifth cricket test between Australia and England was resumed on a fairly good wicket, but the scoring was slow, only six runs being added in half an hour. Oldfield and Hornibrook did good work for their side by getting through the dangerous stage when a new ball was in use. Hornibrook again showed surprising skill and soundness, until clean bowled just before lunch, when the total was eighty. Oldfield was also clean bowled after a plucky display lasting 155 minutes. The bowling was extremely good. At one stage Tate had bowled nine overs for five runs, and Hammond’s average was two for nine. The fielding was equally keen. Every run had to be earned. The century was brought up after three hours* play. After tea only seven runs were added in twenty minutes, the crowd commenting sarcastically. When thirty-four, Woodful had a narrow escape from being run out, but at 35 he played a ball on from Hammond. On being joined by Kippax, Jackson became brighter, making some delightful cuts off Larwood and was dismissed by Geary just when he was showing his best form. Kippax and Ryder carried on till a third appeal against the light was successful, stumps being drawn at 5.45 'o’clock. Critics are of the opinion that the game is in a most interestig stage. England are by no means beaten yet. Following are the scores:— AUSTRALIA. First Innings 491; Second Innings. Oldfield, h Hammond 48 Hornibrook,b Hammond 18 Woodfull, b Hammond 35 Jackson, b Geary 46 Kippax, not out 12 Ryder, not out 8 Extras 6 Total for four wickets .. .. 173 —(Australian Press Association.) (England made 519 in the first innings and 257 in the second.)
