SECOND INNINGS YIELDS SCORE OF 257. GOOD PERFORMANCE BY TATE. - I AN INTERESTING FINISH. (Received Thursday, 8.10 p.m.) MELBOURNE, March 14. When play was opened on the sixth day of the fifth test cricket match between Australia and England, the weather was cool and threateneing. The wicket, which had been rolled out, was slow and easy. Larwood was bowled by Wall in the second over, a stump being knocked out of the ground. Hobbs batted poorly and had several escapes. He was lucky to get sixty-five before being out to a simple catch. Tyldesley also had a series of escapes before being smartly caught by Oldfield. Hammond began confidently but did) not remain long. Hendren was quickly bowled by an exceptionally good ball from Grimmett. The bright particular star of the innings was Tate, who hit out merrily at everything, knocking Grimmett all over the ground and scoring 50 in 52 minutes. His was an invaluable hand for England. England’s innings closed with the score at 257. Australia commenced batting at 5.35 o’clock. Five minutes later an appeal was made against the light. Chapman fielded for Jardine, who had left during the day for England. A third appeal against the light was successful at 5.45 o’clock. Australia, then requiring 279 to win, had all wickets intact.
