HEENEY BEATEN
VAN PORAT OUTPOINTS NEW ZEALANDER. CROWD FAVOURS NORWEGIAN BOXER. CHEERED ON ENTERING RING. (Received Wednesday, 7.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, March 12. Van Porat defeated Heeney on points. When the men entered the ring the public displayed preference for the Norwegian, cheering him, but ignoring Heeney. The first round went to Van Porat, who with his tremendous reach, was able to keep Heeney off and fight him at long range. Heeney, however, won the second round, but lost the third and fourth. In the fifth there was more boxing, in which Heeney displayed his super- ; iority and won the round. In the sixth round Heeney received two rights and a left to the jaw and obviously was hurt when the bell rang, the round going to Van Porat, as did . the next. In the eight, Heeney landed ; a terrific right to the Norwegian’s 'jaw, being easily the aggressor and winning the round. The ninth was also his. At the tenth both shook hands and mixed it furiously, Van Porat bringing blood to Heeney’s mouth. He used his left continuously, causing the blood to flow from Heeney’s face. Van Porat continued to use his opponent’s mouth as a target and landed repeatedly. Van Porat’s round. It was a left to the mouth that penetrated Heeney’s lip, leaving a gaping Wound, necessitating several stitches. There was some difficulty in stopping the blood. Heeney subsequently made the following statement: “I am fighting my way back and you can rest assured I will get there. The best man won tonight, but you will hear from me later.”—(Australian Press Association)
