GIRL GUIDES

DISTRICT ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING. DISBANDMENT OF ST MATTHEW’S COMPANY. PROTEST MOTION DEFEATED. meeting ot the Girl Guides’ Association was held yesterday afternoon, Mrs. A. C. MacDiannid presiding. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames H. H. Bectham, T. Jor--dan, Major and A. Caselberg. When the report and balance sheet were read, Mrs. T. R. Barrer moved that the following protest should’ be added: “That this association protest against the disbandment of the (St. Matthew’s Company without a meeting first being called to obtain the consent of the local association, and also against the reflection cast upon the late company’s captain, Mrs. W. Bullock and the Rev. W. Bullock, at a meeting of the Guides’ parents and the executive of that association at which they were not allowed to be present to- reply in their own defence.” Mrs. Barrer contended that the laws of the movement provided that no company should be disibanded without tho consent of the association concerned. A by-law had been instituted by tha Dominion headquarters, however, and the company disbanded by this means. “What would happen in this country,” said Mrs. Barrer, “if our borough councils made by-laws which over-rode the laws passed' by Parliament?” She added that the association was apparently in existence only for the raising of funds. With regard to the meeting tg which she had referred, Mrs. Barrer contended that proper notice should have been sent to all concerned' that the meeting was to bo held and that the nature of the business to be transacted should have been intimated in the notice. It was not in accordance with British fair play that charges had been made against people who were asked to stay away from the meeting. Mrs. G. J. Goldsman seconded and strongly supported Mrs‘. Barter’s motion.

Several members declared themselves of opinion that, it was best that the matter should be allowed to drop. The motion, on being put, was defeated by a large majority. COMMITTEE’S REPORT. The following annual report is signed on behalf of the committee, by Mrs. T. Jordan, District Commissioner, and Miss V. W. Wooldridge, District Secretary:—

“At the beginning of this year, the Provincial Commissioner found it necessary to disband No. 1 St. Matthew’s Company and No. 3 St. Matthew’s Company. N.o. 2 Solway College, was forced to go into recess owing to the lack of a Guider. We have now reorganised and have formad two new companies—No. 4 Tararua Co. and No. 5 Weraiti Co. The Brownie Pack was transferred to Weraiti Co. The Tararua Co. was formed last October, under Miss V. Hutchison, with Miss M. Bacon as lieutenant. In May of this year the Tararuas held- a parents’ evening, amf gave a demonstration of their work. Shortly after this Miss Hutchison left for a holiday to England, but we were fortunate in obtaining the services of Miss V. Wooldridge as captain. Under her captaincy, the company is working well and everything is going satisfactorily. Miss Hutchison hoped to attend the camp at Foxlease while she was in England. Following on the disbanding of No. 1 Company, a new conroany was formed, called the No. 5 Weraiti Company, under Mrs. Savili Smith. After many weeks of hard work, this company is now in splendid working order. Miss N. Ractliffe has joined the company as lieutenant. In July they held an open afternoon for parents and friends, when colours were presented by Mrs. Macßae, District President, and an enrolment and investiture of leaders took place. The Brownie Pack has a full membership and if some interested lady would offer her services we could start a new pack. Tho Brownies have been working under Miss Bennett, as Acting-Brown Owl with Miss Leach as Tawny Owl. Last January a very successful citmp was held at Mt. Bruce under Mrs. Savili Smith, with Miss Wooldridge and Miss Hutchison assisting. A delightful week was spent and The Guides gained much information in domestic duties and nature knowledge. Wc .desire to' thank Mr Reader for the use of his property and for many kindnesses received during the camp. During the year we have been visited twice by Miss Enijl Bell our Provincial Commissioner, who helped us through in many difficulties. This year the Wellington Provincial Executive decided to bring out a Blue Diploma Guider from England to instruct the Guides in company work Each district was asked to assist financially and out executive decided to contribute £lO " toward the Guider’s salary and to have the benefit of her two weeks. This necessitated the raising of extra funds, so a children’s fancy dress dance was held in July. This was most successful and enabled us to meet this extra expense. The balance at the bank noir stands at -7 7s. Id. Now that the movement, is an a really solid foundation, we hope that all work rwill progress, happily and satisfactorily, and we appeal to the public to support the movement ” ELECTION OF OFFICERS.
