LEVEL CROSSING SMASH.

MIRACULOUS ESCAPE FROM DEATH. ACCIDENT NEAR HAMPDEN. OAMABU, April 4. A level crossing smash occurred near Hampden this afternoon, when the southbound express collided with a motor car driven by James Rodman, who was accompanied Jay Joseph Newlands. Both are members of the Waitaki County Council, and were following the funeral of the late Mr. Nicolson, a former member of the council. The crossing is a particularly bad one and the train, although the whistle was sounded, could not be seen. Newlands jumped clear and Rodman was hurled against a fence, miraculously escaping serious injury, though he is suffering from a severe shaking. The car was smashed beyond repair.—’(P.A.)
