WAVERLEY CROSSING SMASH.
DRIVER’S LUCKY ESCAPE. SCENE OF MANY ACCIDENTS. WANGANUI, Jan. s.—Charles Holdener, a single man, was driving a horse and cart over a railway crossing, near the Waverley racecourse yesterday afternoon when he was run down by the north train. He was unconscious when picked up and was conveyed by the train to the Patoa hospital, suffering from concussion. The cart was smashed, but the horse was uninjured. Tho crossing is a very dangerous one and has been the scene of many serious CQcidents, one proving fatal. Holdener’s condition, to-night shows a little improvement.—(P.A.)
