TROUBLE THREATENED.

SOLDIERS WORK VQLUMNIA. UNDER POLICE PROTECTION. SYDNEY, March 17.—The steamer Volumnia is being worked by the Soldier Wharf Labourers’ Union under police protection, but no trouble is experienced. Thg maritime unions threaten serious trouble as the result. The most serious threat is that the cargo will not be transhipped, and action will be taken to hold up -other steamers. It is understood that strong efforts are being mafia by the Watersiders’ Federation and the Seamen ’« Union to enlist the sympathy of the Trolley and Draymen’s Union. A meeting of that body is being held to consider what attitude it should adopt towards the vessel.—(P.A.) DEADLOCK SETTLED. AT NEW PLYMOUTH. / MAYOR AS MEDIATOR. NEW PLYMOUTH, Mar. 17.—The shipping deadlock is ended after work has been held up for a fortnight. A call for labour will be made tomorrow morning. The settlement was reached through the mediation of the Mayor, who received an assurance from the officials of the watersiders to-day that all calls for labour under the award would be, answered, in the future. This was accepted by the employers and work will resume.—(P.A.)
