BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING.

The Masterton Borough Council met last night the Mayor Mr O. N. C. Pragnell) presiding. Others present were: Crs. H. J. O’Leary, F. W. Temple, W. G. Lamb, T. Dixon, W. Kemp, R. Russell, F. Petersen, F. C. Evans, G. L. Thomas, J. T. Watson and T. Jordan.

The United Friendly Societies were granted the use of the Park Oval for their annual seven-a-side Rugby tournament on April 4, the Council to receive 15 per cent of the gate. The Highway Revenue. A letter was received from the No. 10 District Highways Council advising that in response to the protest of the Masterton Borough Council concerning the allocation of heavy traffic fees, a meeting of Mayors would be convened to suit the convenience of the Masterton Borough representative.

Mr Pragnell stated that as the regulations were not yet gazetted it was little use holding the meeting until they were. Tl;e matter was left to the Mayor to deal with. An application from' the Borough Sexton to have hie wages reinstated to their level of two years ago was referred to the Park Committee. A hawker's license was issued to S. R. Brown.

A petition received from 72 residents of Kuripuni street for a light at the top end of the street was referred to the engineer. The following recommendations of the Finance Committee were adopted: That the action of the Mayor in accepting £9OOO for 20 years at 6 per cent from the State Fire Insurance Co. for the North Ward Water Loan be confirmed. That application be made to the A.M.P. Society "or £ll,000 (the balance of the £l6, JOO North Ward Drainage Loan) at 54 per cent plus 1 per cent Sinking Fund, and for a loan of £l5OO to repair flood damage at Lansdowne. That tenders for pipes for the North Ward scheme be called. ENGINEER’S REPORT.

The engineer (Mr C. R. Mabson) reported:— Water and drainage.—One new service and seven renewals were put in, and new main in Essex street connected up with lOin. main in Renall street, the condition of the lOin main being very satisfactory considering it has been in for 25 years. Lansdowne water:—Burst mains and general maintenance attended to, a satisfactory supply being maintained throughout* the greater- part of Lansdowne.

Streets.— Chapel street culvert (SOin. pipe) has been completed and South road culvert is under way. When completed the Park and Cemetery gates will be proceeded with. Tarring of paths has been carried out in Hessey, Kirton, Fleet, Kuripuni, Renall, Tsrarua, Lett streets, Roberts and South roads, and Hogg Crescent, making a total of approximately 2 miles 2 chains for the month.

Drainage Extension Loan.—During the month 70 chains of 6 inch sewer have been completed in South Belt, Devon, Donald, Bunny streets, Solway road and Hogg Crescent; and 10 chains excavated in Makora road ready for laying. The expenditure to the end of February has been £27,274 19/10.
