. Prince George, as a sub-lieutenant* joins a warship in January and will serve for a period on the China station. Mr Arthur Russell (Waipukurau) was a visitor to Masterton yesterday. Mr Reginald G. Blow. L.R.A.M., the well known baritone, of Wellington, has been engage d by the Wairarapa Caledonian Society to sing at th** New Year’s night concert. Mr W. Brodie, relieving manager ef the Bank of New Zealand, arrived in Masterton yesterday to take over from Mr W. D. Horne, who is going on extended leave of absence. Mr and Mrs Kemble Welch, who have spent the last two years in the United States arc arriving back in New Zealand by the Makura early in January.

The Health Officer (Mr W. A. McGregor) who has been residing at Greytown, will take up his abode in. Maslcrton early in January.

Mi E. L. Nicholson, of the Post Office. Martinborough, has been transferred to Featherston to succeed Mr K. Bicknell, who has been appointed, as Postmaster at Mangahao.

Mr and Mrs D. M. Montgomery, left yesterday to siwi.d a three wcexs’ holiday in Canterbury. During Mr Montgomery ’s absence Mr H. B. Dyer is acting manager of the Bank Australasia.

Mr H. S. Griffin, Secretary for Native Affairs in Samoa, who will be in Master ton to-day with the Faipule, has spent 25 years of his life in Bamoai, where he first held the post of printer to tho London Missionary Society. He is a fluent native linguist. He has also been resident Commissioner in the island Savaii.

Mr H. Drees, MA, who has been a member of the teaching staff of tho Dannevirke High School for four years, and is now taking up a position at the Southland Boys’ High was farewelled at a social evening at which the head prefect, Colin Simmers, presented him with a solid leather suitcase, the gift of tho teachers and pupils.

Mr W. Watson, Commissioner of Lands and Works in Samoa, who is QU throe months furlough in New Zealand is at present in Masterton and the guest of Mr A. W. Reynolds. Mr Watson is a partner in tho firm, of Reynolds and Watson, surveyors and civil engineers, and left Masterton 3J years ago to take a post under the Samoan administration.

The many friends of Mrs James McMaster, of Rongomai, will regret to learn of her death, which, occurred at the Masterton Hospital yesterday. Deceased had been ill for some months and her end was not unexpected. Her husband, who has resided at Rongomai for many years, and one son, Mr J. A. McMaster, survive her, and will receive the sympathy of a wide circle of friends. The funeral will leave Mr G. Hyde’s mortuary chapel at 1.30 p.m. to-morrow (Friday) for the Masterton cemetery.
