CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 17.—Mr A. E Shrimpton, Chief Telegraph Engincer, announces that an order has been placed for a new cable to be laid between the North and South Islands so

as to give proper telephonic communi catiofi.

It will be over a year before the work is completed, but the system adopted will permit people in Invercargill to be heard clearly by people in Auckland.

The Tutanekai will be equipped for the purpose of laying the cable, 4rhich will land on the beach at Seddon, Marlborough.
