SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS. (Our Travelling Reporter.) Clashing Dates. The date applied for by the Masterton Racing Club (March 21) for its race meeting is the same as was applied for by the Wairarapa South Trotting Club some weeks back. The stewards of the Trotting Club had recommended March 14, but on ascertaining the Masterton Racing Club had applied in the first instance for this date, they decided to hold the trots a week later. Carterton Water Supply.

At the Carterton Borough Council meeting Cr. Churchouse asked the Mayor if he had given any consideration to an improvement in the water supply scheme. The Mayor’s reply was: “Have you given any consideration to reverting to rating on the capital value?” Mr Fisher added the council had all the necessary data and a loan of £12,000 (equivalent to an increased rate of 2|d in the £) was required to give anything like an efficient service. He was satisfied a poll would be., carried, but the injustice to those holding farm areas caused him to ponder seriously before asking the ratepayers to vote on a loan. Cr. Churchouse, while stressing the necessity for an improved service, said they were not going to get the people to look back on the system of rating. It seemed to him inconsistent that people with homes should be compelled to go without water out of consideration for those holding land for profit.

Successful Carterton Writer. Mr C. H. Olson, of the Carterton District High School, with his story “Fear,” has won the first prize of £lO in the short story competition conducted by “The New Nation” magazine. Mr Olson, whose verse has been published by other organs, has also had his story “John Peter” accepted by the same magazine. Help Yourselves.

The Carterton Borough Council has adopted a policy of helping those who help themselves in the matter of tarring and sanding footpaths. Up till recently the residents of Seddon street possessed a grass path on either side of the road. They formed a “working bee” and chipped off the grass. The council’s staff then came along and provided the necessary tar and sand to make a good footpath. The same procedure is being adopted in other localities, where ratepayers have tired of waiting their turn for improved footpaths. A Big Draft. A draft of 2500 fat wethers from the Ngakonui estate reached the Waingawa freezing works yesterday morning. School Tennis.

The Carterton District High School Tennis Club visited Featherston on Tuesday, when a trinagular contest took place with the Featherston and South Featherston schools. Carterton defeated Featherston, but were defeated by South Featherston. The following Carterton pupils won their games:—Phyllis Trapp 6/2, Ken Keall 6/4, Agnes Howie 6/5, Winnie Ngatuere 6/2. Phyllis Trapp and Ken Keall won the combined doubles 6/3. Closing Down. It is understood that the Parkvale Post Office will be closed as from December 31. Philips-Street. Not a mectiny of the Carterton Borough ’Council passes without Cr. Churchouse making a reference to the non-completion of Philip street. On Tuesday night lie was told by the Mayor that the contractor, who had already done a portion of the work, would receive no payment till the metalling was completed. Cr. Churchouse asked the Works Committee to remember that they would soon be turning the corner in the direction of winter.
