SIR JOSEPH WARD.
Nobody who has watched the political career of Sir Joseph Ward can honestly do other than express regret that his services to the country have been abruptly terminated. He is not the ideal democratic statesman. He has his limitations, as have other people. But he is at heart a stalwart Imeprialist, who has done much to assist in preserving the, integrity of the Empire and in upholding the high traditions of the British race. He made a fatal mistake in endeavouring to divide the moderate forces in the Dominion into separate groups. He has paid the penalty. It is safe to say, however, that New Zealand will be the poorer for losing the services of one who has played a conspicuous part in framing the democratic legislation ! of the Dominion, and in moulding the policy of external expansion which has done so much to maintain the prosperity of this resourceful country.
