DRAMATIC INCIDENT
A FAMOUS TRENCH,
A dramatic incident of tho defence of Verdun was recalled recently, when Cardinal Dubois, tho Archbishop of Rouen; consecrated the temporary graveyard at what used to be Douaumont. Near 'by is tho famous Tranchee des Fusils. At the very height of the Gorman bombardment a relief section of the 137 th Regiment was making its "Way in single file along this narrow 1 trench when a salvo of heavy shells scored a direct hit, and blow in tho trench. Every man of the section was burried as he stood. And they are still there,, standing, and not very deep, for the muzzlos of their rifles are sticking fifteen inches or so out of the ground in a.row.
