THE SAVINGS BANK.
Some oi' tlx. 1 newspapers oi' the .Dominion are waxing enthusiastic over the fact that the deposits in the Post Office Savings Banks of the Dominion last year amounted to £2,(j-10,-300 more than the. withdrawals. For ourselves, we can. see nothing in these figures to warrant enthusiasm. Although a considerable portion of tlie amount deposited belongs to sold id's on active service, a. large amount lias been placed in the Post Office hy men of affluence who wish iheir money to lie hearing interest and to fie practically at call. Of over £17,000,000 deposited during the year, probably less than £3,000,0110 was invested in war loans and certificates. This camnot he regarded as at all satisfactory. We should lie glad to fhink that the increased deposits represented the. increased prospority of the masses of the people. The facts, however, are entirely against such ;t conclusion.
