THE WAR.
Events in Europe do not appear to have lost any of their interest on account of the holiday season. Whiie | we, in New Zealand, have been making merry, millions have been fighting on the Continent. The position in both East and West appears to he satisfactory, front the point of view of the Allies. The enemy has made a. determined effort to crush tho Russian offensive, but appears to have failed as dismally as in the West. The fighting on tho'Russian .front has been desperate, and tho slaughter is reported as terrible. A German aviator dropped a. bomb in Dover. hut without apparent damago. Another aviator eluded the Coastguard, and made a flight np the Thames river. English aircraft went in pursuit, hut the aerial visitor effected his escape. The Turks have rom-meneod their campaign very badly, and have Tieen smashed up by tho Russians.
