VICTORY AND DEFEAT.

One would think, from the demonstrations of a section of the Opposition Press in New Zealand, that ITie Opposition had gained a magnificent victory at the recent polls. An analysis of the figures, however, shows that quite the reverse was the ease. In 1912 the "Lyttelton Times," which is one .of the strongest Opposition journals in the Dominion, stated that hi-1911, "while 105,921 electors voted for them (the Reformers), 29<\557 voted against them." And what happened! in the recent elections? Let ti's quote the figures, for the purposes of comparison : •

1911 191+ .For Reform 165,921 23(5,121. Against Reform 297,557 258,653

I It will thus be seen that, on the showing of the "Lyttelton Times." the Reform Party has gained over 70,000 votes since 191.1, while the. anti-Reformers have lost about 40,000. If any party should claim a victory, it is surely not that heterogeneous combination that is opposed to the Government.
