THE POSITION TO-DAY.
Tho position at tho scene of hostilities iii Europe is profoundly interesting. Tho Allies, notwithstanding the desperate charges of the enemy, have assumed tho offensive, and appear to bo gaining ■ an advantage, rather than otherwiso. Every inch of the ground is being stubbornly contested. Tho German forces do not appear to be presenting the same reckless courage as at the opening stages of the campaign. The decimating of their ranks and the withdrawal of troops to tho east has probably created dismay. The Allies are showing grim determination, and their morale is said to bo excellent. Tho Kaiser has told his legions to roach Paris, or die in the attempt. They may have to accept the tragic alternative. At anyrate, the progress they have made during the last day or two doe s not encourage the belief that they will attain their objective at tho period decided upon. And should they ultimately reach Paris, what then? Russia on land and Britain at sea have still to be reckoned with.
