THE WAR CABLES.
Our confidence in the censor of war news is being rudely shaken. He is apparently concealing important items of verified information, and allowing reckless fabrications to bo disseminated throughout the Empire. Weeks ago wo were told that tbe Crown Prince had been slain in battle. Now we find him leading the Prussian Guards in a desperate assault upon the Allies. A few days ago we were informed that Boulogne had been abandoned to the enemy. Now we are told that this report was "entirely baseless." Again wo are advised that tlio Allies have driven back tho Prussians at various points. Then we are asked to believe that tho enemy has overwhelmed our forces by tho sheer strength of its numbers. What, in the name of a cruel and mercile<s s war, are we to believe at all? Tho High Commissioner is guarded. He tells us that while there is no room for pessimism, we should not bo over-confident! From tlie clouds of uncertainty we cling to the hope that, in victory or reverse, tho traditions of our race are being worth, ily maintained, and that the justice of our causo will triumph over every obstacle.
