THE RAILWAYS.
In referring to the railway expenditure, the Opposition apologist in Wellington states that the present Goveromen thas merely kept an obligation of the "Liberal" Government in regard to the improvement of the pay and working conditions of the service. This is a very nice way of putting it; particularly when we remember that the "Liberal" Government had time after time promised to improve the service, and consistently and -persistently broken its promise. Assuming, however, for the j purposes of argument, that the; pre-, sent Government lias merely kept an obligation of the previous Administration—which under no circumstance was it boundJ;o do—what are we to think of tTTe Leader of the Opposition when Jjq blames the froveinm&nt for the increased railway expenditure? And what can thought of a newspaper which m otip sentence condemns the Qovernmpjiv for increasing the expenditure, ami in the next blames the Minister for not making concessions to the which would have ihade th© percentageof expenditurg still greater ? ,
