SAWMILL WASTE.
The Auckland Provincial Industrial Association is doing gooa service in drawing attention to the waste that is going on at fne sawmills of the country. Everybody conversant with the industry is aware that there are short lengths of timber that are seldom put to use, and which it does not pay to rail at the present freight®. It is daisied that if the, Government were to substantially reduce the freights for this class of timber, a large quantity'of it might be utilised in the manufacture of; butter and fruit hoxes. The reply: may be given that it would be a> sim•ple matter to convert the. timber into' ■boxes at tile anils themselves. - But, when one rewembers the is6lated position occupied "my many of the mills, and the difficulty in securing suitable trucks, and labour, it will be seen that this alternative is out of the question, in the light of all the circumstances, we are of opinion that the Minister would I>e doing a service to the Dominion by making such a concession in freights as would enable the timber known as "shorts to be profitably utilised.
