Instituted 57 years ago last week by the Royal tvarrant of Queen Victoria, during the Crimean war, the Victoria Cross, the'most valued of all Army and Navy decorations, came into being. Nothing '.save "the merit of conspicuous bravery" gives claim for the decoration, and it must be evinced by "some signal act of valour or devotion to one\s country, performed in the presence of the enemy." Some 550 crosses have heon awarded since its institution, including several posthumous awards. The Victoria Cross is a rsmall bronze Maltese cross, figuring a lion and a crown, with a scroll inscribed "For valour." The reverse is inscribed with the recipient's name and rank.
