MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ADJOURNMENT OF MEETINGS.

At the meeting of the Borough Council Works i Committee, ou Tuesday night, the Mayor (Mr J. A. Kenall) stated that on more than one occasion Council meetings had been adjourned owing to Councillors considering the hour too late to further deal with the business of the Boroagb. He said that he would like the Council tu appoint a time at whioh the business of meetings should cease. The/ Gounoil had a considerable amount of business to deal with, and if it oould not be accomplished at a fairly early hour, the only thing tD do would be to adjourn the meeting until another night. Cr Eton: "Whatever/business is before the Council should be completed. To lay down a stipulated time for the adjournment of meetings would be wrong. 1 will not support any motion in that direction." Or Feist thought that it would not be advisable to set down a speoi--1 fled time for theadjournment of meetings. He was not in favour of sitting late, but he thought that l the Council oould get through all its business by a reasonable hour. If the business oould not be done in one nigbtjbe favoured adjourning until another night. He would be prepared to attend a meeting every night in order to get through the business. Or Morris agreed with Cr Feist's remarks. Or Bwington endorsed Cr Eton's remarks. If there was business to do the Council should do it regardless of the hour. The Mayor: "It appears to me that I shall have to adjourn meetings when I see you're getting sleepy, and not giving your attention to the work." CrFeiat: "1 am of opinion that tho matter of moving the adjournment of a meeting is not only witnin the province of the Mayor, but within the province of any Councillor at any time he choose." The Mayor thought that when he took the trouble to preparo work the Council should consider it. He did not see any necessity for sitting after 10 o'clock. and he thought the business of the meetiugg could be completed by that time.

Or Pauliug agreed with the Mayor's remarks to a certain extent. He thought that when th« Council was discussing a matter, the meetings should not adjourn until that matter was disposed of. He considered that it was not right for new buiiness to be brought up after 10 o'olook. If new business were introduced at that hour he would support a motion for adjournment. The discussion on the matter then dropped.
