LATEST PARLIAMENTARY NEWS.

[By Telegraph.] (From our own Correspondent.) Wellington, September 11th. The debate on Captain Russell's amendment that £500,000 be deducted from the Public Works Estimate is still dragging along, and at times is very personal and acrimonious. A division has been expected to be taken every night since Tuesday, and will most likdy be taken about midnight to-night, all sides being weary. At times the debate assumes a vote of want of confid ence by the Alkinson party. The Canterbury members supporting the motion is a piece of by-play in retaliation for the opposition shown tc the East and West Coast railway. The motion if carried determines that no other new railway works shall go on in the meantime. No matter what comes of Captain Russell's motion the position of the Government remains the same. The business of the country will be pushed on rapidly next week, and the prorogation will probably take place to-morrow week. Messrs Pyke, Downie Stewart, and several others who recently vrenfc into Opposition are now supporting the Grovernment. The member for Twapeka has arranged for a new bridge at Waitahuna, also for the extension of the Lawrence drainage scheme. Mr John Treloar, of Lawrence, having petitioned Parliament for compensation for injuries received while working on the railway, the matter came before the Petitions Comirittee who reported thafc they had no recommendation to make.
