(From our own Correspondent.) Dunedin, September 11th. A fire in the Empire Buildings this morning destroyed three shops, and the Empire Hotel had a narrow escape. The buildings were insured for £1,250, and the stock of one of the shopkeepers was insured for £1700. During the examination to-day of Holland, batcher, o£ G-reytown the bankrupt; staled that the Inhabitants of 40 out of eyery SO hous«i in Greytown weTe idle. At Henley, where Mr Shand had 30 men working last year, he had only two now. Intelligence has been received from KMkihi (Wanganui) that Wilkinson, a native agent, has stopped the Wanganui prospecting party from going to Tuhara, and that he has persuaded the natives to go with the Thames men. Wilkinson says the Wanganui party are not practical miners. The Associations at Wanganui have communicated with the Government, complaining of Wilkinson's interference and stating that both the prospectors are veil known to bo practical aud long-experienced miners. The tenders received for the San Francisco mail service are from the Union Co. and Fearce and Co.
More than half a century ago a good deacon, by the name of Day, had seven children — Bix. daughters and one son* They were known as his six week (weak) Days and one Sun (son) Day.
