RAILWAY EXTENSION TO ROXBURGH.

("Tapanui Courier.") A meeting for the purpose of discussing the advisability of urging upon the Government the extension of the Heriot line to Roxburgh was held in the Dunrobin schoolhouse, on the evening of Saturday last. Mr A. F. M'Kenzie was voted to the chair. The following resolutions were carried :— (1) That this meeting urge upon the Government the necessity for constructing the HeriotRoxburgh railway with all possible expedition. (2) That, in the opinion of this meeting, the route surveyed by the Government (via Moa Flat to Roxburgh) is the best calculated to serve the great majority. (3) That Messrs A. F. M'Kenzie, J. Lomas, and C. Kerse be appointed a subCommittee to draft a petition to Parliament embodying the wishes of the meeting, such petition to be circulated for signature in Crookston, Dunrobin, and Teviot districts.

Mr M'Kenzie read extracts from the Tuapeka Times re the extension of the railway, as showing the activity of the people there. The Lawrence people did not care about railway extension, only for the reason that they were afraid of being left in the background, in the event of the extension being by way of Moa Flat. They would rather the railway were not extended at all, but, if it were to be, Lawrence wanted to be suited as to the route. The Mayor of Lawrence, speaking at a public meeting, said the motto of the Laurence people was " The greatest good to the greatest number ;" but the Chairman doubted that statement very much. They wanted travellers to be compelled to stay in Lawrence all nigbt. Mr M'Kenzie said they would have strong opposition to contend against, and it became the Dunrobin people to spare no exertion in urging their claims.

Mr A. Clifford thought the Lawrence people were trying to blind the public, and the position of Lawrence in the matter was one of selfishness.

Mr R. Heath suggested that it might be advisable to give some contradiction to the Lawrence people.
