A NEW MENACE.
Girl Spies of Criminal Gangs. Secret plans have been drawn up at Scotland Yard to deal with a new menace—the girl spy who works for a gang of crooks. A plausible young woman calls at a prosperous house in the suburbs on some ingenious excuse. She engages the mistress in a conversation, which is dexterously turned to the ways of husbands and other men-about-the-home. The next event is a burglafy, carefully timed to avoid the risk of interference by male members of the household. This method of scouting is to be stopped. Naturally the police have no intention of disclosing the details of their plans, but the “ News-Chronicle ” understands that they include a scheme of closer and quicker co-operation between the C.I.D. branch and the uniformed branch; and more general use of wireless to ensure that Scotland Yard’s patrolling cars shall be immediately notified of what might be regarded as almost trivial incidents. Lord Trenchard foreshadowed the new scheme in his annual report, in which he stated that he, was making plans for dealing with epidemics of burglar}’ in London suburbs and of classifying them under two heads preventable and detectable.
