Earthquake Fears.
Dear Sir,—l see the Christchurch City Council is considering a suggestion to build a tunnel road to Lyttelton. Could they guarantee. the tunnel road to be quakeproof? I believe that no building is absolutely quake-proof. Supposing we had the tunnel road and we had a quake, as at Quetta, what would happen to the people who happened to be in the tunnel at the time, and again what would happen to the shipping at Lyttelton Harbour should a quake cause landslides at or near the mouth of the entrance to the harbour, Godlev Head, for example, and close up the mouth? And how much would it cost to dig them? Also, how much more would a port on the estuary cost than the cost of the tunnel road? Anyway it would be safer.—l am, etc., F. 11. WEBB.
