WARM CLOTHING.

Distribution From Ferry Road Relief Depot. Anyone who passed down Ferry Road this morning might have wondered why there was a queue of men and women waiting outside an old building, stamping feet to keep warm and swinging their arms, cabby fashion, to keep out the chill. They were waiting their turn to receive distributions of clothing collected by the Ferry Road Relief Depot as a result of the postmen’s drive on Saturday, May 18. In small groups they were admitted by a constable stationed in the vestibule of the building, and they filed upstairs to the room whe*e the clothes and bedding were set out. The depot was opened this morning at 9 o’clock and will be open until 4 in the afternoon. It is expected that the supply of clothes will keep those in charge of the depot busy for three days. The distribution of men’s garments is in the hands of Mr G. E Jefferys, and Mrs J. Jack is controlling the women’s section of the depot. Both Mrs Jack and Mr Jefferys this morning remarked on the splendid response to the appeal, and said that the clothes were cleaner and in better condition than in any previous year. There are all varieties of clothes for men. women and children, and the warm woollies for the children were particularly new and clean. In addition to the clothing there is a small quantity of bedding and household necessities such as curtains. Each applicant is being fitted out, as far as possible, with all that is required, but no duplication is being permitted. When the distribution is finished, applicants will have a further opportunity to apply for additional clothing should any be available. There was no sign of disorder this morning, and as each group was fitted out a fresh group was admitted.
