YACHTS IN TROUBLE.
Squalls Cause Excitement at Lyttelton.
With the strong squally south-west wind prevailing on Saturday afternoon on the Lytteltoiv Harbour, those participating in yacht races had a trying time. There were five races for A and B classes, X, Y and Z classes. In addition to the wind there was a long, heavy roll. The smaller craft were particularly difficult to handle. Four capsized, two others had their mainsails split, and yet another had a stay broken. The Rascal (K. Hendry) tipped oyer during a squall when off Ripa Island. Wairema (C. Gaunson), in addition to capsizing, ripped her sail. Ngahau (J. Stevens), when off the east end of the Gladstone Pier, toppled over and was rescued by the tug Lyttelton, which was returning from assisting the motor-ship Anglo-Canadian. out of the harbour. Aloha, one of the Idlealong class, was the next in difficulties. The Ngahau was towed in by the motor-launch Stanley. When all these craft had received assistance or it was seen that they were safe, the Water Witch was missed and a search was made. She sailed in at 7 p.m., after nutting in at Ripa Island to repair a broken stay.
