THIRD CONVENTION.

New Zealand Society of Accountants. The third convention of the New Zealand Society of Accountants will be held in Auckland this year, commencing on February 18. Canterbury will be represented by Messrs W. A. Smith, J. Mawson Stewart (Canterbury representatives on the New Zealand Council). H. A. C. North, C. A. Perkins, R. L. Hicks and Thomas Auton. The convention will be opened by the Mayor of Auckland, Mr G. W. Hutchison, and an address will be given by the president of the society, Mr H. Valentine. On February 19, papers by Mr R. Arthur Glen on the report of the Commission of Inquiry into company promotion methods and an examination of the proposals made, and by Mr W. H. Hemingway on credit control, will be discussed. The following day the possibilities and limitations of secondary industries in New Zealand will be the subject for discussion, introduced by a paper by Dr E. Marsden, and Mr E. T. Spidv will submit a paper on the scientific management of secondary industries in New Zealand. That afternoon the annual meeting of the society will be held. On Thursday. February 21, the chairman will be Mr W. A. Smith, of Christchurch. There will be discussions on papers concerning the development of accounting practice by Mr G. C. Crimp and the statistical interpretation of accounts by Mr R. C. Burgess. Canterbury Remits.

A number of remits will be discussed, during the convention. The remits from Canterbury deal with (1) a request to the council to investigate the possibility of establishing an optional insurance scheme to provide for superannuation of members and their employees; (2) that in order to encourage the more general adoption of modern accountancy methods and to emphasise the advantages of consulting members of the society, booklets-be issued at regular intervals dealing with accountancy problems in a clear and nontechnical manner; (3) affirming the necessity of bringing the New Zealand bankruptcy laws up to date and in line with other Dominions; (4) requesting the council of the society to add clauses to its regulations, with adequate penalties for infringement embodying all the substantial matters at present understood as the etiquette of the profession; and (5) urging the necessity for consolidating in one statute all land and income tax legislation. The annual report of the council states that the membership of the society stood at 2319, an increase of 415 for the year. The candidates who sat for the annual examinations covering the professional subjects of the society’s examinations conducted by the University of New Zealand numbered 3860. One hundred and eightytwo candidates completed the full course in that examination. The council was in touch with accountancy bodies in England and Australia with a view to arranging reciprocity of membership. The income and expenditure account showed an excess of income over expenditure of £1347, and the accumulated fund stood at £6216.
