TERMS EXPIRE.
Tramway Appeal Board Members. CHANGE ANTICIPATED. The term of the nominated members of the Tramway Appeal Board—the Hon W. Hayward, M.L.C., and Mr J. A. Webb—will expire on February 28. An official notice will be issued next week calling on the Christchurch Tramway Board and the Tramway Employees’ Union to nominate new members within fourteen days of the issue of the notice. Last year the board came into the forefront of public attention when it heard the appeals of men who had been lowered in grade as the result of the regrading system carried out by the Tramway Board, which was elected in November, 1933. It was alleged that men who had been volunteers during the strike of 1932 had been unfairly treated. In many cases the Appeal Board, which was presided over by Mr H. A. Young, S.M., and comprised Messrs Hayward and Webb, upheld the contention of the appellants. Mr Hayward’s chances of reappointment are negligible for he was appointed to the Appeal Board by the previous Tramwav Board, of which he was a member. When that board went out of office at the election in November. 1933, Mr Hayward retained his appointment on the Appeal Board, despite the wish of the new Tramway Board that he should retire. So far. it was learned to-day, the present Tramway Board has not considered the position, but in Labour circles it is believed that the most likely nominee will be Mr J. Mathison, who is a member of the Tramway Board and a former tramway employee. There is not expected to be any doubt concerning the reappointment of Mr Webb as the representative of the employees.
