ABOLITION OF BOARD.

Member Suggests Tramway Alterations. An argument against the present system of divisions for the election of the Tramways Board w’as put forward by Mr G. T. Thurston, a member of the board, at a meeting of the Upper Riccarton Burgesses’ Association last night. “I contend that there should be one, whole Christchurch area,” said Mr Thurston. “As it is now, there is too much selfishness on the part of the district representatives. Each member usually attends only to the needs of his own area, and is contemptuous of anything another representative wants done. “ For instance, it costs 7d to travel one way around the Riccarton loop, 6d to travel the other way. There should be a flat rate of 6d for both ways, yet, whenever I bring the matter up. I am exasperated by the amused and apathetic attitude of the other members of the board. “ In fact, I believe the whole Tramways Board should be abolished,” added Mr Thurston. “ Some sort of central control should instead be established. We have authority to abolish the boundary system, but it would, of course, be necessary to get the consent of all the suburban authorities to do away with the board.”
