SPEEDWAY NIGHT.
Fireworks as Special Attraction. An attempt by Ray Taylor to lower the four-lap record set by the Englishman, Squib Burton, a few years ago, a challenge by Hobson for the Gold Helmet (best two out of three races, three laps, from a rolling start), and, by way of a special attraction, a big fireworks display by the Wainoni Company, will be the chief events at the fourth dirt track meeting at Monica Park on Saturday. The fireworks display has been arranged in response to many requests from entrants in the competition for novelty suggestions, in pursuance of the management’s- wish to make the meetings as attractive as possible. The firew T orks display staged by the Wainoni Company during the Duke’s visit was judged to be the best to date in New Zealand, and with that reputation to live up to the firm may be relied on to provide something spectacular for Monica Park.
Ray Taylor should stand a good chance of beating the four-lap record, not only because he now has a faster machine, having purchased one which belonged to the late Charles Blacklock, but also because he will attempt riding closer to the grass, thus cutting down both distance and time. Taylor’s form last Saturday was the best he has shown speedway enthusiasts and he has behind him the accomplishment of three laps (three-quarters of a mile) in 52 3-ssec at Wentworth Park, Sydney. In addition to these special events there will be a full programme of handicap, scratch and match races, with Ken Kirkmin, Ray Taylor and Charlie T '~" ‘o setting the pace. Perabo rode a sensational race against Taylor on his first appearance last week, and if he maintains that form on Saturday, thrilling racing should be assured. The famous English rider, “ Tiger ” Stevenson, Billy Lamont and Arthur Atkinson have been engaged by Stadium Sports, Ltd., for later meetings at Monica Park this season.
