Preparation of Address to Duke. (Special to the “Star.") ASHBURTON, December 9. The ilhiminated address which will be presented to the Duke of Gloucester on the occasion of his brief visit to Ashburton is a credit to the artistic ability of Mr F. 11. Choate, who was responsible for the designing and production of it. .The loyalty of the Dominion is symbolised in the headpiece by the New Zealand Ensign together with the Royal Standard supporting the crown and the intermingling of the fern leaf with the national emblems—the rose, the thistle, and the shamrock. In the top corners the products of the soil are represented by sheaves and clusters of fruit. From a golden rod on either side of the design the respective coats-of-arms of the borough and county are suspended. A panel showing a typical New Zealand pastoral scene with sheep and dairy cows in the foreground and a view of the Southern Alps as seen from Ashburton are set in a decorative border of native clematis and scarlet rata. Scholarships Awarded. The John Bell scholarships, which are tenable at the Ashburton High School for two years and are of a value of £lO a year have been awarded as follows: Robert Plunket, Norman Capon, Ken M’Connell, Robert Mavnard (all of A 1 lenton) and Gordon Hill (Westerfield). Ashburton Technical High School. A successful dance to mark the an nual break-up was held in the Ashburton Technical High School Hall last evening. A large attendance of present and past pupils filled the tastefully decorated room. Daybourne’s orchestra supplied a varied selection of dances, the school orchestra contributing the extras. The Monte Carlo was won by Miss Molly Rattray and Mr Edgar Watts, and the Lucky Spot dance by Miss Kathleen Stoddart and Mr A. Rattray. The senior girls, under the supervision of Mrs Rose, provided a very dainty supper. Mr V. J, Crequer acted as M.C. Personal. Members of the Ashburton W.E A. recently gathered at the residence of Mr and Mrs E. Buchanan, Wills Street West, and made a presentation to the host and hostess in appreciation of the hospitality shown to members through out the year. Miss E. J. Watt (Matron of the Ashburton Public Hospital) was presented with two footstools at a meeting of the Ashburton District Women’s Institute These Hvere a Christmas gift from members and will be used in the hospital sunroom. Mr C. D. Francis, who has been on the teaching staff of the Borough School for about two years, will leave Ashburton at the close of the present term for Timaru, where he has accepted a position on the staff of the Timaru South School.
