ATHLETICS.
Inter-Club Competition Continued. GOOD FIELDS FACE STARTER. Ideal weather conditions favoured • the second series of events in the Can--1 terbury Amateur Athletic Centre’s > inter-club competition, held in the • presence of a fairly large gallery of ‘ spectators at Lancaster Park this afternoon. There were good fields for the majority of the events, but times were not 1 outstanding, indicating that the runners have not reached their best form. Nevertheless, competition was keen and a number of close finishes contributed to the interest of the afternoon. The Technical star distance man, C. H. Matthews, who ran well in the mile last week, was too good for the rest of the field in the Grade A threemile event, clearing out in the last mile and winning easily from G. PI. Watson, Old Boys. In the hop, step and jump, P\ S. Barra dough (Canterbury) was responsible for a good performance, covering 43ft 0 J in. R. Blake (Varsity) covered 40ft Oiin.' The best time recorded in the 220yds was that of C. S. Barrell (Syd.), who covered the journey in 24sec.
