PIPE BANDS.
Championship Suggested for Timaru. (Special to the “ Star.”) TIMARU, November 7. A proposal to hold the Dominion championship pipe hand contest at Timaru on February 16 was unanimously approved at a well-attended meeting of citizens presided over by the Mayor, Mr T. W. Satterthwaite, this evening. The acting-secretary, Mr A. Mathteson, reported that up to the present ten hands had promised to compete, and there was a prospect of five others participating, from as far apart as Wan- ] ganui and* Invercargill. No reply had yet been received from the Waimate, Temuka and Ashburton bands as to whether they would compete, but it was likely that they would. It was suggested that the profits should be divided on the same basis as in Dunedin last year, the organising band taking 50 per cent, the New Zealand Association 25 per cent, and the other competing bands 25 per cent. The prize-money at Dunedin was £l5O, and it was expected that approximately £2OO would be required to conduct the contest. The entry fee l’or each band would be £l2 lus, of which £5 would be refunded to each band which competed. With an entry of at least ten bands, £125 only would have to be raised. The following executive committee was appointed: Messrs R. Oliphant, W. Duncan, C. W. Cameron, A. H. Clemens. 11. Sinclair-Thomson, A. Hay, D. Grant. J. E. P. Cameron, A G. Williamson. W. D. llume, S. R. Burns, T. M’Leod, F. J. Jamieson, T. Seaton and. J. Ilalliday. Mr J. Glass was appointed secretary, and .Mr W. D. Hume was appointed was empowered to appoint sub-commit-tees. _______________
