FRAUD ALLEGED.
Unusual Case Heard in Wellington. Per Press Association. WELLIXGTOX. This Day. Allegations of obtaining by false pretences large sums of money from a co-director of Organising Brokers of New Zealand, Ltd., were made against Reginald Howan, 37 years of age. a labourer, to-day. lie was charged with causing Edward Nicol Sutherland to pay to Organising Brokers, Ltd., £379 Is and £lB9 4s 8d by false pretences, and with stealing from the company money amounting to £641 5s lOd. The allegations are that after the formation of the company it was decided to extend the activities to include sharebroking. Sutherland knew nothing of sharebroking and the accused represented that it was necessary to have funds immediately available to buy shares to be resold at a profit. The company having no funds, Sutherland made advances, and it is alleged that the accused converted part of the advances to his own use. It was stated that in ten months Sutherland advanced £1427 19s 7d, most of which had been repaid, the exceptions being amounts which the the subject of the false pretences charges. (Proceeding.)
